No recent data regarding the gross enrolment ratio for tertiary education for both sexes, the initial government funding per tertiary student as a percentage of GDP per capita, or the initial household funding per tertiary student as a percentage of GDP per capita is available.  

Tuition-free status

No national laws and policies offering tuition-free public tertiary education have been identified. 

Governance

The higher education system is supervised by the Ministry of Education, through the Directorate of Higher Education and Science, which is mandated to “assure the design, execution and coordination of the policies concerning higher education and science.”

São Tomé and Príncipe does not have a well-defined funding policy for higher education, aside from the funds designated for scholarships for overseas studies (37% of the 50% of the budget dedicated to higher education. No equity formula has been identified.
